NURSERY 2-4 YEARS

All about Toadhall Montessori Nursery

Toadhall Montessori Nursery caters for children from two years of age until they commence full time school at four to five years of age. The CIW legal requirements for staff ratios is 1:4 for children two to three years old and 1:8 for children three to four/five years old.   Toadhall Montessori Nursery has 25 places available.   At Toadhall Montessori Nursery, we provide a staff child ratio of 1:4, thus ensuring every child’s individual needs are fully met.

All staff at Toadhall Montessori Nursery have qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills in working with this age range. They are very experienced in providing an enabling learning environment and activities for every child, irrespective of their learning needs. We also have a highly qualified and experienced Additional Needs Coordinator at nursery, who works closely with all staff and parents to ensure every child’s needs are catered for.

We have developed excellent relationships with external agencies, who can provide additional help and ongoing support, especially when your child is ready for the next stage of their education and learning journey.

Toadhall Montessori Nursery is open from 8.00 am until 6.00 pm Monday to Friday for 52 weeks of the year and is closed for all bank holidays.

The main aim at nursery is to provide a well-planned Montessori environment, which is organised and prepared for your child’s emotional, social, creative, intellectual, cultural, spiritual and physical development.   Toadhall Montessori is designed to ensure that every child is happy, secure and comfortable, thus providing physical freedom and subsequently an important element of independence of work.   English is the main language used, but children are encouraged to learn and use everyday Welsh phrases and vocabulary related to numbers and shapes, as stated earlier in our introduction.

As soon as your child enters Toadhall Montessori Nursery, they receive experiences, which introduce ideas, skills and subjects that they will meet again through later life and further education.   This is known as a ‘spiral curriculum approach’.   It enables children to revisit earlier learning experiences and make valuable connections.   In addition, your child is helped to develop independence, self-confidence, concentration, motivation to learn, flexibility and creativity.

As the Owner of Toadhall Montessori Nursery is a fully qualified and highly experienced nursery/primary teacher, the nursery’s curriculum is designed to lay the necessary solid foundation for the primary stage of your child’s education.

At Toadhall Montessori Nurseries and Out of School Academy, we have begun to incorporate the New Curriculum for Wales, which is currently being piloted, with a view to full roll out in 2022. There are ‘4 Purposes’ of the New Curriculum for Wales which are that children and young people will become:

    1. Ambitious ,capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives
    2. Enterprising, creative contributors, who are ready to play a full part in life and work
    3. Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the World
    4. Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

Within the New Curriculum for Wales there are 6 Areas of Learning and Experience, (AOLE’s), namely:-

    1. Health and Wellbeing
    2. Language, Literacy and Communication, including Welsh
    3. Mathematics and Numeracy
    4. Science and Technology
    5. Humanities
    6. Expressive Arts

At Toadhall Montessori Nurseries and Out of School Academy we believe the New Curriculum for Wales integrates seamlessly within the Montessori approach to teaching and learning. In 1906 Maria Montessori developed a worldwide acclaimed pedagogy, (an approach to teaching and learning), as described earlier.

We believe the 4 Purposes and 6 Areas of Learning and Experiences (AOLE’s) of the New Curriculum for Wales 2022, have already been firmly established within the Montessori approach for over 114 years! We are totally committed to developing our Montessori approach by incorporating the New Curriculum for Wales 2022, within our work with children and young people, to ensure they ‘become the best that they can be’.

Maria Montessori stated that:-

“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future”

The table below shows how the Montessori Approach, the current Foundation Phase and the New Curriculum for Wales (2022), weave seamlessly together within the Toadhall Montessori Curriculum for the 21st Century.

The Montessori pedagogy, that is to say, approach, to teaching and learning, at Toadhall Montessori Nursery, includes an excellent balance of indoor and outdoor activities to develop skills for Everyday Living, Reading, Writing, Language and Communication, Mathematics and Numeracy, Welsh, The Arts ,including Singing, Music, Movement, Dance, Poetry and Drama, Imaginary Role Play, Creative Arts and Crafts, History, Geology, Astronomy, Botany, Gardening, Zoology, Biology and other Sciences and Information and Digital Technology .

There are three ‘pastoral groups/keyworker’ groups’ within the Montessori Nursery setting: –

The Moles Group, which caters for children aged 2- 2½ years

The Badgers Group, which caters for children aged 2½ – 3years

The Toadies Group, which caters for children aged 3 years and above

Please note that these age ranges are a guide only, as the individual needs of every child, along with those of the parents, is discussed at length, before any ‘transition’ is made from one group to another.   At Toadhall Montessori Nursery, the ‘wellbeing’ of every child is paramount.   Each pastoral group has two keyworkers.

The children enjoy a daily ‘circle time’, both indoors and outdoors, in their keyworker groups, which involves focused activities and lots of hands-on interactive play, which caters for all individual needs. Activities are always planned to allow for differentiation and ensures every child is engaged in learning new concepts and ideas. At all other times in the day, the children develop their ‘work cycle’ in ‘family groupings’, making their own choices, exploring and learning at their own pace, through free flow movement, within the context of the Montessori approach. The children come together for social interaction at times during the day, such as ‘Assembly Time’.   Assembly Time is very often focused on a particular ‘topic or theme’, which the children have shown a particular interest in – that is to say ‘child led’.

Mealtimes are also very much a relaxed, social occasion, when the children have the opportunity to set the table, serve themselves and help clear away and wash up. Staff sit with the children and model healthy eating.   The children are encouraged to cook and experience a variety of different foods and to understand the importance of ‘healthy eating’, rest and exercise, to enhance their wellbeing.

The children have many opportunities to prepare and cook lots of different healthy foods, which helps them learn about the different food groups and the importance of healthy eating. The fruit kebabs and vegetable soup are always firm favourites!!

As part of our ‘outdoor learning’ programme, staff take small groups of children on outings to the local park, library, shops, etc. At Toadhall Montessori Nursery, we also undertake trips further afield, such as Cardiff Museum, Cardiff Bay, Saint Fagan’s and Barry Island, to name but a few. We are fortunate to be based near to Llandaff train station and good bus routes, which allows us to take the children out and about, further afield.  We also have our own transport .Appropriate staff ratios are maintained at all times. Risk assessments are undertaken and consent forms must be completed by parents/guardians.   If you do not wish your child to take part, then your wishes are respected.

Activities in the ‘outdoor areas’ are extremely important to Toadhall Montessori. Nursery.  The children are able to explore in a hands on, active way, to play and learn in our well-equipped sensorial ‘outdoor learning gardens’. Toadhall Montessori has also established a ‘Forest School’ outdoor learning environment at Hailey Park, which is easily accessible on foot. We have also established a Coastal School, which gives the opportunity for children to experience a specific programme of activities to develop an understanding of the beach and coastlines near Cardiff. The children visit Barry Island and Porthcawl at least six times during their time at nursery.  Our ‘outdoor learning’ areas are used every day – even on rainy days, as wet weather clothing is available.   Our mantra at Toadhall is, “it’s not bad weather – just bad clothing!”

Individual curriculum and activity planning is carried out and is centred on each child’s learning and development. We use the Talking and Thinking Tubs, Floor Mat and Floor Book approach to activity planning, focusing upon the interests of the children. All keyworkers undertake continuous observation and assessment to ensure activities are planned to meet the individual developmental needs of each child. We have incorporated the Foundation Phase Profile tool, to enhance observation and assessment within the nursery setting.  Every child has their own ‘learning journey’, which is a continual record of their achievements and developmental milestones.

As stated earlier, at Toadhall Montessori Nursery, we place great value upon creating a close ‘Partnership with Parents’ and continue to build upon the close relationships we have developed with parents, whilst their child was at creche. We encourage lots of opportunities for parents to really ‘participate’ in their child’s development.  Throughout the year we hold at least two parents’ evenings and several informal ‘open days/evenings’, including ‘Mother’s Day Tea’. ‘Father’s Day Breakfast’, ‘Christmas Crafts’, to name just a few.

All staff are available to sensitively support parents when needed. Senior Staff are qualified as Family Links Facilitators and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to help parents through the more challenging times of parenthood, as and when needed, especially during times of transition and change.

At Toadhall Montessori Nursery, we aim to ensure every child is ready for the next stage of their ‘learning journey’, when they are starting fulltime school. A summative report is written for every child who is going to start the next stage of their learning journey – namely full-time school. This is celebrated with the children and their parents during our annual ‘graduation ceremony’ and barbeque!

It is such a truly joyous occasion to celebrate every child’s amazing achievements during their time at Toadhall Montessori Nursery and to know they are ready to fly the ‘Toadhall Montessori Family Nest!!
